00:00:00.299 --> 00:00:02.111
Hey, this is Ryan Otley.

00:00:02.164 --> 00:00:03.891
And this is Robert Kirkman.

00:00:03.891 --> 00:00:06.708
and we are the creative force behind Invincible.

00:00:06.708 --> 00:00:11.833
And you are listening to the Oblivion Bar Podcast.

00:00:16.077 --> 00:00:23.274
Welcome to the Oblivion Bar podcast with your host, Chris Hacker and Aaron Knowles.

00:00:39.405 --> 00:00:42.100
Hello everybody and welcome to the Oblivion Bar podcast.

00:00:42.100 --> 00:00:47.377
I am Chris Hacker, one of your co-hosts here and joining me this week is my BFF, Aaron Knowles.

00:00:48.518 --> 00:00:53.435
No, do they I don't know the walking dead they ain't ever say don't say things.

00:00:54.735 --> 00:00:55.646
I don't think they do.

00:00:55.646 --> 00:00:56.497
I don't know.

00:00:56.497 --> 00:01:02.902
Everybody this week on the show, we are talking to, you know, casually to legends in the comic book world.

00:01:02.902 --> 00:01:05.944
Casually, NBD, Aaron, it's not a big deal.

00:01:05.944 --> 00:01:06.954
We're really cool about it, too.

00:01:06.954 --> 00:01:08.635
We don't even make a big deal about it.

00:01:09.334 --> 00:01:11.237
don't even know any good acronyms.

00:01:12.376 --> 00:01:13.349
NBD is the only one you know?

00:01:13.349 --> 00:01:14.783
about LOL?

00:01:17.001 --> 00:01:17.424
R.B.?

00:01:17.424 --> 00:01:19.710
uh T.G.I.F.

00:01:19.786 --> 00:01:21.671
oh, P and the V.

00:01:22.221 --> 00:01:22.882
That counts?

00:01:22.882 --> 00:01:23.561
I think that's it.

00:01:23.561 --> 00:01:24.442
Okay.

00:01:24.442 --> 00:01:25.582
That's the one.

00:01:25.582 --> 00:01:27.753
This week, everybody, Robert Kirkman and Ryan Ottley.

00:01:27.753 --> 00:01:31.484
Now let's just talk about these two gentlemen really quickly.

00:01:31.484 --> 00:01:39.397
Really, there's no introduction needed, but I think it's important to realize that like these two gentlemen, they have done something incredible with the Invincible Universe.

00:01:39.397 --> 00:01:54.887
And we talked about in this conversation with both Robert and Ryan that when The Walking Dead first started to take off, I thought to myself, you know, this is like an incredible moment in comic book, in comic book history because the success of The Walking Dead was everywhere.

00:01:54.887 --> 00:02:03.710
mean, people that had never picked up a comic in their life were glued to their television every Sunday night on AMC to tune in for the next episode of The Walking Dead.

00:02:03.710 --> 00:02:13.185
It was like, I think maybe between this, between The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones as like the last water cooler TV shows ever, right?

00:02:13.185 --> 00:02:19.937
Where you had to catch, you had to watch that episode because the next day everybody was going to be talking about it at work or at school or what have you.

00:02:20.038 --> 00:02:20.877
So.

00:02:20.973 --> 00:02:31.633
When I say that like invincible in 2025 has, if not like surpass the walking dead, but is like on the same level as walking dead in terms of popularity, that is a huge feat.

00:02:31.633 --> 00:02:35.653
And that is all thanks to again, Robert Kirkman and Ryan Olley.

00:02:35.659 --> 00:02:36.631
Yeah, I'm just looking out.

00:02:36.631 --> 00:02:44.993
uh did Invincible actually came out the same time that The Walking Dead did, comic wise?

00:02:44.993 --> 00:02:46.215
Yeah, they were running.

00:02:46.215 --> 00:02:48.735
I mean, relatively congruent with each other.

00:02:48.735 --> 00:02:55.278
I want to say the walking dead is slightly older, but yeah, I mean, they're basically the same, you know, around the same timeframe.

00:02:57.121 --> 00:03:00.853
How in the world do you come up with both the walking dead and invincible at the same time?

00:03:00.853 --> 00:03:15.080
Now again, here's the thing I really respect about Robert Kirkman is that both of these things, both invincible and walking dead are these like total isolated moments in comic book history that just fucking work.

00:03:15.093 --> 00:03:22.078
You know, like the walking dead, it's famously said that like Robert Kirkman pitched the walking dead as this alien story by issue six.

00:03:22.078 --> 00:03:31.448
I want to say he was going to reveal that the universe, this universe that the walking dead was in this virus that was brought to earth and made zombies was from aliens and Kirkman.

00:03:31.448 --> 00:03:35.905
We don't get into it in this conversation, but like he has always said that like that was always a fib.

00:03:35.905 --> 00:03:37.806
He was never going to bring aliens.

00:03:37.806 --> 00:03:44.557
It was just the fact that like at this time in history, in 2003, the zombie genre was waning.

00:03:44.557 --> 00:03:45.837
popularity of it.

00:03:45.837 --> 00:03:51.737
Like he had like the Resident Evil and a lot of the like Night of Living Dead was big in the eight seventies and eighties.

00:03:51.737 --> 00:04:00.918
And like that whole zombie trope was just sort of a, a very popular product at the time, but Kirkman was obviously very, very influenced by this.

00:04:00.918 --> 00:04:07.318
Uh, you know, he said often that like Night of the Living Dead and Resident Evil were big influences for this story, but like he always wanted to tell a story.

00:04:07.318 --> 00:04:14.823
And then again, invincible, another classic example of like the coming of age superhero story that at that time, around 2003.

00:04:14.823 --> 00:04:23.209
If you think about like what Marvel and DC were doing at the time, Marvel had their Marvel Knights books, know, Kirkman plays in that universe a little bit with like Marvel zombies and such.

00:04:23.209 --> 00:04:28.372
It was all dark and gritty and rated for mature type of comics.

00:04:28.372 --> 00:04:29.963
And of course that's what invincible kind of is.

00:04:29.963 --> 00:04:43.086
It is very mature and bloody and you know, over the top in certain instances, but like at its heart, I feel like it's very much like a coming of age, learning who you are going to become, not who you were supposed to be type of story.

00:04:43.086 --> 00:04:43.485
Yeah.

00:04:43.485 --> 00:04:51.646
Nature versus nurture, leaning on your morals and not giving into whatever influences that don't align with your own.

00:04:51.646 --> 00:05:00.386
I think that that's, I find it so interesting that The Walking Dead became such a massive hit at the same time.

00:05:00.386 --> 00:05:06.805
And like, well, I mean, obviously it took like seven years because it took seven years for The Walking Dead, the television show to come out, but it was probably developed for a while.

00:05:06.805 --> 00:05:34.855
like really 2007, 2008 really is when like a lot of zombie movies and lot of like vampire a lot of horror like stuff based on that was like really coming out so I mean really I mean it's it's hard to say that like the show or the I mean the comic itself defined zombies or at least anything in Yeah, the walking dead comic was wildly popular wise, but but like the most popular comic in the world is not really doing much in terms of influence.

00:05:35.206 --> 00:05:40.526
So, but, then you got to see like in 2010 when the show came out, obviously it was insanely influential.

00:05:40.526 --> 00:05:47.725
mean, it's already spawned multiple spin-offs already still going to this day and it's almost what 15 years later.

00:05:47.725 --> 00:05:48.925
So, I mean, it's insane.

00:05:48.925 --> 00:05:55.766
I mean, it's insanely popular, but you know, we only got about 30 minutes, 35 minutes to chat with, with Robert and Ryan.

00:05:55.766 --> 00:05:57.886
And it was a fun conversation.

00:05:57.886 --> 00:06:00.105
Definitely wish we could have gotten them for a little bit longer.

00:06:00.105 --> 00:06:02.776
Like we normally do with a lot of our guests.

00:06:02.776 --> 00:06:16.375
But I think overall it was just a great conversation getting to peek behind the curtain into, know, Battle Beast, which is part of the, you know, the Invincible universe and honestly one of my favorite characters in that entire like sandbox.

00:06:16.375 --> 00:06:16.565
Yeah.

00:06:16.565 --> 00:06:25.060
mean, I think people have been clamoring for not only more invincible comic book material, but specifically Thok and his story throughout invincible.

00:06:25.060 --> 00:06:26.230
Something fresh.

00:06:26.230 --> 00:06:26.410
yeah.

00:06:26.410 --> 00:06:30.351
mean, and like no one does this universe quite like Robert and Ryan.

00:06:30.351 --> 00:06:31.552
Obviously it's third universe.

00:06:31.552 --> 00:06:36.834
I Corey Walker, no disrespect to Corey Walker who did the first, I want to say 12 issues of invincible.

00:06:36.834 --> 00:06:39.656
Invincible is its best when it's Robert Kirkman and Ryan Otley.

00:06:39.656 --> 00:06:45.834
The book takes a definite hike in quality and energy and all the things that you want.

00:06:45.834 --> 00:06:48.197
once Ryan Otley gets on with the book.

00:06:48.197 --> 00:06:55.286
you know, it's no secret that like the majority of the best parts of the invincible universe come from Ryan Otley and his artwork.

00:06:55.286 --> 00:06:57.766
We say it during or will you say it during the interview?

00:06:57.766 --> 00:07:07.300
We discuss it with both of them that once Ryan Lottley came on board, some of the most defining moments in the entire series are really flushed out.

00:07:07.300 --> 00:07:11.591
And I don't think that any other team combination could have done it.

00:07:12.812 --> 00:07:13.713
Exactly, exactly.

00:07:13.713 --> 00:07:24.759
I think this whole story with Battle Beast, Thok and and and a little bit of his origin, a little bit of his understanding, a little bit of the depth into who his character is, is what a lot of fans, know, myself included.

00:07:24.759 --> 00:07:28.600
have been like hoping would be done for a very long time.

00:07:28.600 --> 00:07:35.021
And you know what's interesting about this interview, everybody, before we get into, know we're doing a lot of prefacing before this conversation with two legends.

00:07:35.021 --> 00:07:36.872
I know you're like, Aaron, Chris shut the hell up.

00:07:36.872 --> 00:07:39.632
I want to hear Kirkman and Ottley and I get it.

00:07:39.632 --> 00:07:43.603
like what Aaron and I, think we, put on a good, we put on a nice clean show here.

00:07:43.603 --> 00:07:44.113
Everybody.

00:07:44.113 --> 00:07:44.673
We do it.

00:07:44.673 --> 00:07:46.605
We got a nice back and forth.

00:07:46.605 --> 00:07:54.197
We Epson flows, all the superlatives things like that, but like 30 minutes is a good amount of time to get with Kirkman and Olly.

00:07:54.197 --> 00:07:57.077
But like we had questions we wanted to ask them.

00:07:57.196 --> 00:08:14.880
And I think where Aaron and I do a lot of our best work is when we have a little bit of freedom to sort of go off on a trail, do a side quest, as we like to say here, segue into something like when we can joke around and sort of be a couple of dipshits, like that's when we're our best, but like, there's just like no time for that in this conversation.

00:08:14.880 --> 00:08:21.286
And I think you're going to see that you're going to hear it pretty clearly that like, we want to, we want to get all the questions out to these two people.

00:08:21.286 --> 00:08:26.485
they're like, you know, as you're listening to this, just know that like we tried to make the most of it.

00:08:26.485 --> 00:08:33.134
And we might've gotten in our heads a tiny bit when it came to the structure of the conversation here with Robert and Ryan.

00:08:33.134 --> 00:08:34.173
Well, I'm not going to put it down.

00:08:34.173 --> 00:08:36.394
I'm going to say this is a great conversation.

00:08:37.014 --> 00:08:40.774
We had a great time with them and they think they had a good time.

00:08:40.774 --> 00:08:41.193
Yeah.

00:08:41.193 --> 00:08:42.974
I guarantee they had a great time.

00:08:42.974 --> 00:08:45.433
We've already gotten word back that they had a great time.

00:08:45.433 --> 00:08:48.254
And when we get good feedback, you know, it means the world to us.

00:08:48.254 --> 00:08:50.193
And they're always welcome back on the show.

00:08:50.193 --> 00:08:56.553
You know, even though we'll see Ryan Otley in a couple of weeks or in a couple of days, like we see we see him all week.

00:08:56.874 --> 00:09:03.269
But no, like again, we just they were they were awesome to come onto the show and it was a great discussion and we hope you guys really enjoy it.

00:09:03.330 --> 00:09:03.951
Absolutely.

00:09:03.951 --> 00:09:06.812
We're to get into that conversation with Robert Kirkman and Ryan Otley here.

00:09:06.812 --> 00:09:19.399
And again, as we said, Battle Beast, number one, the official spinoff of the Invincible Universe, you know, starring everyone's favorite white, super aggressive, kind of horny sometimes, Tiger there in the Invincible Universe.

00:09:19.399 --> 00:09:21.150
That first issue comes out on May 14th.

00:09:21.150 --> 00:09:29.206
So the Wednesday that you're listening to this conversation, this comes out on the 12th, you will be able to go to your local comic book shop and pick up that first issue on the 14th, that Wednesday.

00:09:29.206 --> 00:09:29.951
So.

00:09:29.951 --> 00:09:32.754
Aaron, before we get in that conversation, will you please let the listeners know?

00:09:32.754 --> 00:09:34.985
Because I hope we bring in lot of new listeners.

00:09:34.985 --> 00:09:42.552
People see Kirkman and Ottley like, hey, let me listen to these two idiots for, you know, 11 minutes and then eventually I'll hear Robert Kirkman's voice.

00:09:42.552 --> 00:09:44.653
Tell them how they can support the Oblivion Bar Pop.

00:09:44.653 --> 00:09:45.825
to just fast forward it through all this.

00:09:45.825 --> 00:09:46.745
But thanks for being here.

00:09:46.745 --> 00:09:49.277

Go check it out in the show notes.

00:10:34.450 --> 00:10:34.789
All right.

00:10:34.789 --> 00:10:40.177
We're going to do a couple of quick ads and then we will get in this conversation with Robert Kirkman and Ryan Ollis.

00:11:05.427 --> 00:11:12.017
Conrad and undiscovered genius and 2024 Ringo Award winning artist Dave Chisholm is an excellent choice.

00:11:12.017 --> 00:11:16.202
The first issue was excellent and that second issue comes out on May 7th.

00:11:16.202 --> 00:11:18.684
Aaron, did I mention that Dave Chisholm is a genius?

00:11:18.807 --> 00:11:20.298
did and it was excellent.

00:11:20.298 --> 00:11:23.160
And we already know how you love Scott Pilgrim versus the world.

00:11:23.160 --> 00:11:32.748
But be on the lookout for the first issue of Dark Regards from multi-hyphenated writer, comedian, actor, musician, Dave Hill and breakout artist Artyom Topolin.

00:11:32.748 --> 00:11:48.008
This first issue tells the tale of how one standup comedian forged a secret identity as America's first true black metal icon and accidentally started an international incident that almost wiped Gary, Indiana off the map.

00:11:48.096 --> 00:11:53.653
As somebody who's been to Gary, not all of that quote unquote incident sounds horrible.

00:11:53.653 --> 00:11:56.496
Dark Regards number one hit shelves on May 14th.

00:11:56.769 --> 00:12:07.596

00:12:28.302 --> 00:12:32.682
Joining us today are the creative team of Invincible Universe Battle Beast.

00:12:32.682 --> 00:12:45.461
One is the Eisner Award winning writer and co-creator of a small indie titles you've probably never heard of like The Walking Dead, Firepower, Outkast, Oblivion Song, Void Rivals, and of course Invincible.

00:12:45.461 --> 00:12:55.179
The other is the co-creator for the majority of the Invincible Universe and the primary artist for the series penciling 127 of the 144 issue run.

00:12:55.179 --> 00:13:01.398
You may also know him from his recent stint over at Marvel Comics with both The Amazing Spider-Man and The Hulk.

00:13:01.398 --> 00:13:06.904
It is our pleasure to welcome both Robert Kirkman and Ryan Ottley onto the Oblivion Bar podcast.

00:13:06.904 --> 00:13:07.789
Yeah.

00:13:07.789 --> 00:13:08.750
Welcome.

00:13:08.769 --> 00:13:09.690
you, fellows.

00:13:09.929 --> 00:13:11.250
So great to see you both here.

00:13:11.250 --> 00:13:11.710
Wow.

00:13:11.710 --> 00:13:17.110
This is an incredible moment here in the pantheons of Oblivion Bar history.

00:13:17.629 --> 00:13:18.549
So great.

00:13:18.549 --> 00:13:20.529
We were talking a little bit before the conversation.

00:13:20.529 --> 00:13:21.710
Robert, this is our first time meeting.

00:13:21.710 --> 00:13:23.389
Thank you so much for being here.

00:13:23.389 --> 00:13:24.809
Ryan, you're an old friend.

00:13:24.809 --> 00:13:25.470
I'll see you.

00:13:25.470 --> 00:13:27.370
I see you like every other week.

00:13:27.590 --> 00:13:29.309
you know, good to see you, I guess.

00:13:29.309 --> 00:13:31.769
It's great to see you.

00:13:31.929 --> 00:13:32.909
It is.

00:13:32.909 --> 00:13:34.450
I'm totally joking there.

00:13:34.450 --> 00:13:36.168
And I think happy to see you.

00:13:36.168 --> 00:13:37.798
oh Aaron.

00:13:37.798 --> 00:13:40.212
I know you're always a smiley face at these conventions.

00:13:40.212 --> 00:13:41.427
Good to see you again.

00:13:41.666 --> 00:13:44.527
I think it's important to just sort of kick this whole thing off.

00:13:44.628 --> 00:13:45.717
Let's just talk about Battle Beast.

00:13:45.717 --> 00:13:49.270
I think it's probably the best thing, the best way to start this conversation.

00:13:49.270 --> 00:14:02.538
That first issue hit shelves on May 14th and the story picks up moments after the events of 2004's Invincible 19 where Battle Beast main handles Mark, Bulletproof and Black Samson and then promptly teleports away.

00:14:03.698 --> 00:14:08.341
And now there's a quote from the Skybound press release that I want us to sort of explore here.

00:14:09.471 --> 00:14:16.197
No longer a mindless avatar of death, Thok begins to awaken from a haze of his bloodlust.

00:14:16.197 --> 00:14:31.813
So Robert, with all the continued success of the comic series and now the mega success of the animated series over on Prime, what was it specifically about Battle Beast that made you guys feel like this is the right time for you guys to reunite, you and Ryan, to reunite and tell more stories about him?

00:14:31.884 --> 00:14:34.268
mean, the short honest answer is Ryan was available.

00:14:34.268 --> 00:14:36.785
you uh know.

00:14:36.785 --> 00:14:43.188
Battle Beast became one of our favorite characters from Invincible, if not our favorite character from Invincible.

00:14:43.188 --> 00:14:46.571
You I've always wanted to tell more stories with Battle Beast.

00:14:46.571 --> 00:14:55.835
You know, you can see how he kind of started showing up in the book more and more as the series progressed until he stopped showing up in the book, unfortunately.

00:14:55.835 --> 00:15:01.398
But yeah, mean, it was just, uh you know, something that I thought would be really fun.

00:15:01.398 --> 00:15:11.522
And when Ryan's dalliance with Marvel finally came to an end, you know, I was trying to find something cool that we could do together and Battle Beast ended up becoming that thing.

00:15:11.522 --> 00:15:12.706
Thank you for rescuing him.

00:15:12.706 --> 00:15:15.250
Yeah, thank you for getting back over at Skybound.

00:15:15.250 --> 00:15:21.821
Ryan, how was it for you when you finally got the call and you guys finally figured out this is the time to get back to the events of the universe?

00:15:21.821 --> 00:15:23.053
What were your thoughts there?

00:15:23.053 --> 00:15:25.514
I mean, I definitely look at it as a dream project.

00:15:25.514 --> 00:15:31.219
mean, Invincible is definitely the thing I'm most proud of in my whole career.

00:15:31.219 --> 00:15:34.900
The biggest project I've done and the biggest project I'll ever do, to be honest.

00:15:34.900 --> 00:15:38.493
mean, I don't think I can do that long of a run ever again.

00:15:38.493 --> 00:15:44.345
you'll He'll come against me somehow.

00:15:44.426 --> 00:15:56.318
But, uh, no, it was awesome because I mean, Marvel was fun, but, uh, I did miss working with Robert and being in the invincible universe where there's pure freedom.

00:15:56.318 --> 00:15:58.164
So yeah, it was great.

00:15:58.754 --> 00:15:59.783
This is your playground, right?

00:15:59.783 --> 00:16:00.544
Like this is your guy.

00:16:00.544 --> 00:16:05.115
You guys, you guys have done all the, mean, you know, Robert, of course you just sort of came from your brain.

00:16:05.115 --> 00:16:11.557
Then Ryan, I, know, I think it's safe to say that the majority of our favorite moments in invincible history came, you know, directly from your hands.

00:16:11.557 --> 00:16:14.087
So it's, cool to see you guys back together.

00:16:14.087 --> 00:16:22.721
And uh I like that Spider-Man realm with you and Nick Spencer and you know, you're in Donnie's work on the Hulk and then the one that you eventually finished there at the Hulk was great too.

00:16:22.721 --> 00:16:24.650
But you know, maybe I'm selfish here.

00:16:24.650 --> 00:16:27.572
I'm happy that you guys are both doing invincible again as well.

00:16:27.576 --> 00:16:28.409
Same.

00:16:28.450 --> 00:16:32.249
was somehow able to pull some cool moments out of those lesser writers' works.

00:16:32.706 --> 00:16:40.645
you Let's go ahead and get this is a good time to bring in Donny Cates and Spencer into the chat.

00:16:42.687 --> 00:16:43.562
I'm kidding.

00:16:43.562 --> 00:16:47.682
got to say, like I same sentiment that you guys have about Battle Beast.

00:16:47.682 --> 00:16:52.562
is he quickly became my favorite character of the entire Invincible series.

00:16:52.562 --> 00:16:54.701
So I'm glad to hear that he's yours as well.

00:16:54.701 --> 00:17:02.881
So I'm just super excited to see where you go with him and potentially we're going to say potentially other family members that he might have.

00:17:02.881 --> 00:17:09.324
But, you know, Ryan, you've been pretty vocal in the past about how Battle Beast is the one character you've always wanted to explore more of.

00:17:09.324 --> 00:17:12.499
but were hesitant to overuse during the original run of Invincible.

00:17:12.499 --> 00:17:23.705
uh At his core and outside of him having a killer design and just being one of the biggest badasses of the series, is there an element of Battle Beast's character you and Robert really want to explore here?

00:17:23.819 --> 00:17:33.579
I that's more of a Robert question, I mean, visually, just, yeah, I just want to make him the most badass as I possibly can, make him look, you know, and yeah.

00:17:33.710 --> 00:17:42.804
I mean, for me, think that putting him through his paces and really having this be like an action-oriented series where Ryan can strut his stuff is really important.

00:17:42.804 --> 00:17:47.195
But I think there's an emotional aspect to the character that we're exploring that's a lot of fun.

00:17:47.195 --> 00:17:58.201
And I think if you look at who he is in issue 19 and who he is in issue 55 and who he becomes over the run of those issues, you know, there's a big difference there.

00:17:58.201 --> 00:18:08.369
And I think that exploring what caused that difference and what maybe made him grow into oh a more well-rounded character is gonna be fun to explore.

00:18:08.369 --> 00:18:17.299
And so we have this really cool gap in time that we can kind of get into the nooks and crannies of finding as many interesting aspects as possible about the character.

00:18:17.299 --> 00:18:19.862
And that's something that's really exciting to me.

00:18:19.862 --> 00:18:22.390
It's telling a story where...

00:18:22.390 --> 00:18:24.872
You know, we're doing cool action and we're doing great stuff.

00:18:24.872 --> 00:18:32.549
But when you read this series and then go back and read those old issues of Invincible, you'll have a different understanding of Battle Beast.

00:18:32.549 --> 00:18:39.566
And those stories will have a different sort of feel to them because of what Ryan and I were able to accomplish with this series.

00:18:39.673 --> 00:18:41.414
I'm excited to hear that as well.

00:18:41.414 --> 00:18:48.329
ah just I already know that even because listeners don't know this, but we've already got to read Battle Beast number one and even just in that one.

00:18:48.329 --> 00:18:54.202
No spoilers, but there's there's a significant change even within the first few pages in Battle Beast character.

00:18:54.202 --> 00:19:04.930
So I'm excited to see you how you guys are going to continue to explore just that that mentality change that he has, you know, going forward because it's I mean, it's already significant just in issue one.

00:19:04.930 --> 00:19:09.252
Yeah, and again, we pick up moments after that issue 19 where we first meet Battle Beast.

00:19:09.252 --> 00:19:17.784
Aaron and I were talking before the recording and I love that in the pantheons of Invincible's history, the first words that Battle Beast says is, Roar.

00:19:18.342 --> 00:19:30.009
It's roar with two exclamation points, which, he's known for being this sort of like poetic, just like monster, you know, but just the fact that his like his first words were roar, it just really tickles me.

00:19:30.009 --> 00:19:35.541
But let's say that, you know, someone has only seen the invincible series.

00:19:35.541 --> 00:19:39.375
You know, they haven't read up to, you know, the 144 issues.

00:19:39.375 --> 00:19:41.905
I have the companions right next to me and they're like thick babies.

00:19:41.905 --> 00:19:45.528
You could be a burglar with these things and it would probably knock them out.

00:19:45.528 --> 00:19:51.662
Kudos to the fans that carry the hardcover Omnibuy around, the multiple ones to the conventions to get you guys to sign them.

00:19:51.662 --> 00:19:52.237
Like kudos.

00:19:52.237 --> 00:19:56.202
Those guys are like, they rock more than some of us like while we were in the military did.

00:19:56.202 --> 00:19:57.005
It's amazing.

00:19:57.005 --> 00:19:57.493
Yeah.

00:19:57.493 --> 00:19:58.298
Yeah.

00:19:58.349 --> 00:20:00.555
building muscle mass with this book.

00:20:01.118 --> 00:20:03.343
We're accomplishing great things.

00:20:04.046 --> 00:20:22.006
I think it's safe to say that like nothing is spoiled in what eventually happens to talk at you know in this first issue of this new series But Ryan Robert whoever wants to sort of take this one How would you suggest fans approach this new comic series going forward if they haven't read anything past issue 19 of a visible?

00:20:22.114 --> 00:20:24.798
Well, they've probably already seen season one, two and three, right?

00:20:24.798 --> 00:20:25.578
Sure.

00:20:26.000 --> 00:20:27.182
And that's all you need?

00:20:27.182 --> 00:20:31.003
Yeah, I mean, I think that, uh you know, we've carefully crafted this series.

00:20:31.003 --> 00:20:36.729
So if you've read every issue of Invincible and you've watched every episode of the show, this book will make sense.

00:20:36.729 --> 00:20:38.009
You'll totally dig it.

00:20:38.009 --> 00:20:44.673
If you've not read any of Invincible and not watched the show at all, but you're like, I don't know, I want to try this stuff.

00:20:44.673 --> 00:20:47.036
uh This series will make complete sense.

00:20:47.036 --> 00:20:51.940
There's nothing dependent of Invincible for you to understand.

00:20:51.940 --> 00:20:55.458
If you've only watched the show, totally works.

00:20:55.458 --> 00:20:57.358
You know, nothing is going to be spoiled.

00:20:57.358 --> 00:21:02.480
There's not any kind of like callbacks to things that have happened uh in the series.

00:21:02.480 --> 00:21:06.432
If you have seen everything, there's going to be Easter eggs.

00:21:06.432 --> 00:21:12.486
And when certain characters reappear or are introduced, you'll go, I know that character.

00:21:12.486 --> 00:21:14.026
It's exciting to see them again.

00:21:14.026 --> 00:21:19.729
ah But if you are unfamiliar with Invincible, they'll just seem like cool new characters being introduced.

00:21:19.729 --> 00:21:22.349
And it'll work in that context as well.

00:21:22.349 --> 00:21:34.891
ah So, yeah, we're going to great lengths to make sure that there isn't any kind of, you know, well, if you don't know what eventually happens in Invincible 102, you know, this issue of Battle Beast doesn't make sense.

00:21:34.891 --> 00:21:36.602
Like, we don't want to do anything like that.

00:21:36.602 --> 00:21:41.496
uh know, and we want Battle Beast to feel like its own self-contained story.

00:21:41.496 --> 00:21:45.769
So you will get a complete experience from reading Battle Beast.

00:21:45.769 --> 00:21:54.326
It has a beginning, middle, and an end and will exist as its own piece and is not necessarily dependent on invincible.

00:21:54.326 --> 00:22:00.023
So, you know, we're trying to make sure it's a satisfying read for anybody that's coming at it from any angle.

00:22:00.023 --> 00:22:00.394
Sure.

00:22:00.394 --> 00:22:06.497
You know what I think most listeners already probably know by this point, Robert, is that like, you know, you used to work at a comic shop.

00:22:06.497 --> 00:22:10.218
You really value that brick and mortar inclusiveness when it comes to these events.

00:22:10.218 --> 00:22:17.641
You know, I I don't think it even would be a Robert Kirkman release if you didn't have some kind of, you know, surprise planned for the launch of a new book.

00:22:17.641 --> 00:22:18.981
You know, most fans.

00:22:20.301 --> 00:22:22.762
I'll tell you from the fan's perspective, we really appreciate it.

00:22:22.762 --> 00:22:29.506
It's nice to know that, like, you know, at least a couple of the creators, you know, Ryan included in this, you guys really go to the extra lengths.

00:22:29.506 --> 00:22:31.746
to make this launch really special.

00:22:31.746 --> 00:22:40.946
And you know, I think very specifically of like the die, die, die surprise drop, the unannounced last issue of the walking dead, even jet fire showing up again in void rivals.

00:22:40.946 --> 00:22:44.800
Number one from a couple of years ago with the energon universe.

00:22:44.800 --> 00:22:58.159
So Forgetting that comic that was discovered in a warehouse that was apparently from another dimension, Solid Blood 17, that an alternate reality Robert Kirkman and Ryan Otley did that was sent out.

00:22:58.159 --> 00:23:02.571
Because we just found printed copies at a warehouse, so we just distributed those for free as well.

00:23:02.571 --> 00:23:09.076
I just wanted to make sure you didn't forget the alternate reality Ryan was involved in.

00:23:09.672 --> 00:23:13.106
Are we talking about the Rick the Rick Grimes uh story?

00:23:13.106 --> 00:23:14.476
Is this what we're talking about here?

00:23:14.476 --> 00:23:16.826
Ryan, these guys don't even know what solid blood is.

00:23:16.826 --> 00:23:20.643
I don't know who these guys are.

00:23:20.643 --> 00:23:21.374
We're not real fans.

00:23:21.374 --> 00:23:22.355
Damn it.

00:23:22.696 --> 00:23:23.397
You were.

00:23:23.397 --> 00:23:24.806
thought we were.

00:23:25.721 --> 00:23:27.303
What was your excuse, Aaron?

00:23:28.826 --> 00:23:29.949
He's not.

00:23:29.949 --> 00:23:36.778
oh Blood 17, very, very, very unique and somewhat rare artifact.

00:23:36.778 --> 00:23:37.451
Okay.

00:23:37.451 --> 00:23:42.023
Can you give us a little bit of back just because I want Sign copy right here.

00:23:42.765 --> 00:23:49.678
But can watch Robert's uh video on YouTube talking about how Diamond has the palette.

00:23:49.678 --> 00:23:50.438
I'm a nerd.

00:23:50.438 --> 00:24:00.077
I'm not being coy, but the printer, it was during the pandemic in like 2021, the printer called us, called Eric Stevenson and was like, we've got some image comics here.

00:24:00.077 --> 00:24:01.657
We don't have like a distribution order.

00:24:01.657 --> 00:24:03.877
I don't know what, like what is going on here.

00:24:03.877 --> 00:24:14.538
And they did some digging and it was, you know, like a shipment ready to go of a fully printed comic that was credited to myself and Ryan Ottley.

00:24:14.538 --> 00:24:18.773
And they, you know, sent samples to us and showed it to us and...

00:24:18.773 --> 00:24:26.238
It was characters that Ryan and I had vaguely talked about doing things with, you know, like years ago, but we had never really gotten around to doing it.

00:24:26.238 --> 00:24:27.648
And so it's super weird.

00:24:27.648 --> 00:24:29.079
It looks like I wrote it.

00:24:29.079 --> 00:24:33.982
It looks like Ryan drew it, but it's a comic that kind of came out of nowhere.

00:24:33.982 --> 00:24:40.695
And if you read the comic, there's like all kinds of like weird like things that don't quite make sense.

00:24:40.695 --> 00:24:47.211
The letters column talks about how I did a comic called Walking Dead, but it got canceled, but that didn't actually happen.

00:24:47.211 --> 00:24:48.903
So I don't really understand.

00:24:48.903 --> 00:24:54.748
But uh I think it's some kind of prank that somebody that's able to ape our work, you know, had done.

00:24:54.748 --> 00:25:02.083
You know, I decided to just distribute it because I was like, if you're going to play a prank on me like that, I'm going to call your bluff.

00:25:02.083 --> 00:25:04.994
So we just sent it out to retailers for free.

00:25:05.316 --> 00:25:08.718
And, you know, people seem to enjoy it, but now no one remembers it.

00:25:08.718 --> 00:25:12.442
I'm looking at the cover right now and it absolutely does look like your artwork, Ryan.

00:25:12.442 --> 00:25:14.594
oh That's wild.

00:25:14.594 --> 00:25:20.660
Like we got some Skynet like back in time, like stuff, you know, changing the timeline.

00:25:20.660 --> 00:25:22.451
We're in the darkest timeline right now anyway.

00:25:22.451 --> 00:25:23.978
So this totally makes sense.

00:25:23.978 --> 00:25:28.854
I don't buy into all that stuff, but it's definitely somewhat bizarre.

00:25:28.854 --> 00:25:38.661
Yeah, well, let's talk about what you guys are doing here with battle beasts and and ryan again This probably has a lot to do with what you're going to provide for this whole We should spend the rest of this podcast talking about solid blood.

00:25:39.150 --> 00:25:41.632
I scrap the transcript.

00:25:43.253 --> 00:25:44.394
Delete the transcript.

00:25:44.394 --> 00:25:45.885
Talk about solid blood the rest of the time.

00:25:45.885 --> 00:25:48.848
Now, uh the blind bag program.

00:25:48.848 --> 00:25:49.808
Tell us a little bit about this.

00:25:49.808 --> 00:25:56.806
And again, I'm very curious because you guys again are just like with, you know, all of this seem very coy about about it.

00:25:56.806 --> 00:26:01.211
Oh, the blind bag program, mean, you blind bag is not a new concept.

00:26:01.211 --> 00:26:04.301
You know, there's blind box figurines and things like that.

00:26:04.301 --> 00:26:05.663
It's kind of a fun thing.

00:26:05.663 --> 00:26:14.428
And like I say, we're always trying to, you know, make the experience of going into the comic book store as special and unique and memorable as possible.

00:26:14.428 --> 00:26:15.989
And so we thought it'd be neat.

00:26:15.989 --> 00:26:20.531
You you do all these variant covers for these comics now and some of them are very rare.

00:26:20.531 --> 00:26:27.218
And so without messing up the rarity, you know, we're able to put all of these comics in the blind bag.

00:26:27.258 --> 00:26:33.978
So again, it's very rare, but you could get a one in 1000 Battle Beast cover in this blind bag.

00:26:33.978 --> 00:26:39.498
You could get the one in 500, you could get the one in 50, you could get the one in 10.

00:26:39.498 --> 00:26:41.157
I think those are all covers that we did.

00:26:41.157 --> 00:26:44.018
I don't know the exact ratios of everything, but you get what I'm saying.

00:26:44.057 --> 00:26:54.625
So anyway, you know, but there's also, so every variant cover of Battle Beast, you could possibly get at random in this blind bag, but there are three.

00:26:54.625 --> 00:27:05.010
very special, very unique, very exciting comics that are also available in these blind bags that I don't think I can talk about because I don't know exactly when this podcast is going to go up.

00:27:05.010 --> 00:27:11.834
uh let me just say they are all very special and very unexpected.

00:27:11.834 --> 00:27:19.877
And one of them is absolutely insane to the point where if I told you what it was right now, you possibly wouldn't even believe me.

00:27:20.425 --> 00:27:23.625
OK, I mean, I don't think you can hype that up anymore.

00:27:23.625 --> 00:27:26.169
I guess let me kick it over to Ryan here.

00:27:26.169 --> 00:27:29.150
What has been your sort of preparation for this blind bag program?

00:27:29.150 --> 00:27:38.634
Because, you know, if I know anything about Ryan Otley is that you come with the goods when it comes to invincible covers, original art, all the things, trading cards even.

00:27:38.634 --> 00:27:39.266
Yeah.

00:27:39.266 --> 00:27:44.291
I mean, again, we can't say exactly what's going in there, but eh you shall see.

00:27:44.291 --> 00:27:52.140
I mean, you know, I did the one in 1000 cover and so, you know, that's the one that, that's going to be the rare one to get in there.

00:27:52.140 --> 00:27:56.571
Is it going to be like a like a battle beast drape like what Thragg wears?

00:27:56.571 --> 00:28:00.324
You know, it's just like the the entire head and cape looking thing.

00:28:00.324 --> 00:28:02.555
Can you get one of those in this blind bag like?

00:28:03.075 --> 00:28:05.695
I don't know.

00:28:05.695 --> 00:28:06.057
Yeah.

00:28:06.057 --> 00:28:06.946
It's just a coupon.

00:28:06.946 --> 00:28:09.006
You have to go to Robert Kirkman's house and get it.

00:28:09.006 --> 00:28:10.046
Oh, that's a good idea.

00:28:10.046 --> 00:28:10.667
We'll have to do that.

00:28:10.667 --> 00:28:13.459
There's this one blind bag that's like super soft and squishy.

00:28:13.459 --> 00:28:15.661
I don't know what's in that one.

00:28:15.661 --> 00:28:16.671
I'm sure it's a comic.

00:28:16.671 --> 00:28:28.946
I will say one of the cool things is that if you, I don't remember exactly what the quantity was, but if a retailer ordered a certain high number of books, they actually got an original sketch cover drawn uh by Ryan Otley.

00:28:28.946 --> 00:28:34.829
So, you know, we expected that to be very few stores and it ended up being.

00:28:34.965 --> 00:28:36.247
quite a few stores.

00:28:36.247 --> 00:28:43.671
So there's a lot of stores out there that have like an original uh Battle Bee sketch cover drawn by Ryan Otley.

00:28:43.730 --> 00:28:49.050
So, you know, definitely, you know, inquire at your store if that's available, if you're listening to this.

00:28:49.050 --> 00:28:53.490
And that's not going to be part of the blind bag, but that is the one in 2,000 variants.

00:28:54.188 --> 00:28:54.538
Yeah.

00:28:54.538 --> 00:28:58.509
One of my favorite things about, know, again, Ryan, we've worked together at some of these cons before.

00:28:58.509 --> 00:29:05.917
And one of my favorite things is when something sells for a lot of money that deals with Ryan's art invincible, his response is almost always the same.

00:29:05.917 --> 00:29:09.111
And you guys listening to this can't see my face, so I'm just going to try to describe it.

00:29:09.111 --> 00:29:15.897
It's like eyes open, eyebrows up and like surprise like it hasn't happened a hundred times before today.

00:29:16.875 --> 00:29:19.342
Up drop conquest, ripping apart, I'm like yes.

00:29:19.342 --> 00:29:20.481
Yeah, let's do it right now.

00:29:20.481 --> 00:29:21.001
I'll do it.

00:29:21.001 --> 00:29:22.826
What do you it's the funniest thing.

00:29:22.826 --> 00:29:47.192
I love the fact that Ryan is genuinely surprised when people come up and like every single time so appreciative of people like appreciating your art and what you've done for Invisible for these other runs and same with you Robert like this is the first time I'm actually getting to see you like what you look like in person because honestly like I've seen your pictures but every time I try and see you at a convention like you're you're Swamp.

00:29:47.192 --> 00:29:48.732
It's never the opportunity.

00:29:48.732 --> 00:29:49.222
it's awesome.

00:29:49.222 --> 00:29:49.933
ghost.

00:29:49.933 --> 00:29:51.124
Yeah, it's so awesome.

00:29:51.124 --> 00:29:58.960
like Ryan makes himself available to table and like people come up and show him their cosplays, their art, their, you know, their pops.

00:29:58.960 --> 00:30:06.387
And you're like, you're just like sitting there, bells on, smiling, just happy as hell because you just genuinely love that people appreciate it.

00:30:06.387 --> 00:30:09.135
And it's so like, awesome to see as a fan.

00:30:09.135 --> 00:30:12.721
I just want to say before I get to the final question, thank you for being just like that genuine.

00:30:12.721 --> 00:30:14.344
And I'm not saying that you're not like that, Robert.

00:30:14.344 --> 00:30:16.025
I just haven't interacted with you.

00:30:16.086 --> 00:30:18.640
I'm not saying- I was like, we know.

00:30:18.640 --> 00:30:19.800
offend Mr.

00:30:19.800 --> 00:30:20.921
Kirkman in such a manner.

00:30:20.921 --> 00:30:26.453
I have a lot of his stuff and I will one day get it signed because I will meet you in person and say, hello, sir.

00:30:26.453 --> 00:30:27.153
Great job.

00:30:27.153 --> 00:30:33.026
But I've seen Ryan plenty of times and I'm like, I tell his wife, great job for supporting this amazing guy in his art.

00:30:33.026 --> 00:30:35.037
you know, Ryan's just a genuine sweet dude.

00:30:35.037 --> 00:30:36.519
He's a sweet man.

00:30:36.519 --> 00:30:39.712
You don't know the things Ryan says to me behind the scenes.

00:30:39.712 --> 00:30:50.782
If you only knew the sour, hateful, spite-filled rants he goes on about the fans and about you guys in particular.

00:30:50.884 --> 00:30:56.148
Every night at conventions, my gosh, just the bile that comes out of this guy.

00:30:56.148 --> 00:31:01.064
oh Evans from the deleted scene in Deadpool and Wolverine right now.

00:31:01.064 --> 00:31:08.406
ah But Robert, we'll get with Ryan for the follow up on this.

00:31:08.406 --> 00:31:16.619
But Robert, you've mentioned an early goal for you in your career was to be like Eric Larson and writing and drawing one long running comic forever.

00:31:16.619 --> 00:31:25.693
Again, this question's for both of you, but is it safe to say that the Invincible universe might be that series that you just write about until you can't anymore?

00:31:26.114 --> 00:31:27.075
Possibly.

00:31:27.075 --> 00:31:28.634
We're certainly having a lot of fun.

00:31:28.634 --> 00:31:41.412
And I think, you know, Create Our Own is, you know, to have the freedom to decide that, you know, we get to come back to this whenever we want to, we get to put it on a shelf and have it available to us whenever we want to.

00:31:41.412 --> 00:31:47.746
And so, you know, I think that that's uh a, you know, a very like Eric Larson-esque tradition.

00:31:47.746 --> 00:31:54.009
you know, him being part of the founding of Image Comics, you know, puts us in the position to be able to do that.

00:31:54.009 --> 00:31:55.372
So, you know.

00:31:55.372 --> 00:32:03.204
tremendous amount of gratitude to him and the rest of the Image Founders for that opportunity that they've given us and many other creators.

00:32:03.204 --> 00:32:04.586
But yeah, I don't know.

00:32:04.682 --> 00:32:12.898
I Invincible is unique in that I wrote it for 16 some odd years and then immediately started writing the pilot for the show.

00:32:12.898 --> 00:32:16.971
And I've been working on the show constantly uh nonstop since then.

00:32:16.971 --> 00:32:21.323
And so I really haven't, you know, there's been a gap between Invincible and Battle Beast.

00:32:21.323 --> 00:32:33.986
But for me, it's all Invincible all the time for Going on 20 I will soon be dust going on 20 some odd years now So yeah, I could see writing this stuff for the rest of my life.

00:32:33.986 --> 00:32:56.692
It's definitely a universe that I Love telling stories in and and I think that there's room within the universe to do absolutely anything Which could not be on more display than it is in Battle Beast the things that we do in this series and the different Directions the story goes I think are really going to take people by surprise and now that I've said far too many words, Ryan.

00:32:56.726 --> 00:33:06.303
Yeah, I mean, even when I was at Marvel for five years doing that stint, was like, was very, I was very excited to get more because I kept doing covers.

00:33:06.303 --> 00:33:11.576
You we kept doing covers of new editions and that kind of thing of the library editions and all that.

00:33:11.576 --> 00:33:13.531
So always fun to jump back on that.

00:33:13.531 --> 00:33:18.071
And then, of course, at the conventions, you know, I do quite a quite a few shows a year.

00:33:18.071 --> 00:33:23.246
So the majority of commissions I do, you know, it's mostly invincible stuff.

00:33:23.246 --> 00:33:23.955
So.

00:33:24.046 --> 00:33:26.478
It's like I've never stopped drawing these people, you know?

00:33:26.478 --> 00:33:30.382
it's, to me it's very exciting and it's always fun.

00:33:30.382 --> 00:33:36.237
to jump back into it and have it be my full-time job again is quite exhilarating.

00:33:36.357 --> 00:33:40.181
So, and I, again, can't wait for everyone to see what we got.

00:33:41.089 --> 00:33:43.761
You know, speak on that again with us working together at cons.

00:33:43.761 --> 00:33:52.931
I think one of the cooler moments, you know, throughout these experiences is watching how quickly Ryan can knock out these incredible invincible sketches, right?

00:33:52.931 --> 00:33:54.903
It's what the blood splatter and everything.

00:33:54.903 --> 00:33:55.834
Ryan, you knock it out.

00:33:55.834 --> 00:33:59.096
seems like in like 10 minutes, but it's you could put it into a comic.

00:33:59.096 --> 00:34:00.037
You can put it on a page.

00:34:00.037 --> 00:34:00.887
It's how good it is.

00:34:00.887 --> 00:34:03.359
ah So it's really cool to see that.

00:34:03.359 --> 00:34:07.468
And, you know, again, as we said at the beginning, this is sort of my close out here is it.

00:34:07.468 --> 00:34:22.958
What a pleasure it was to get both you guys here on the show together to talk about not only Battle Beast, which again, that comes out on May 14th, that first issue comes out on May 14th, but to also just like talk about invincible as a whole, because Aaron and I are both huge fans, not only again of the comic, but the show is incredible.

00:34:22.958 --> 00:34:26.630
It's it's there's a reason why it's equally as big of a hit.

00:34:26.630 --> 00:34:30.713
And Robert, and actually small side question before we get out of here.

00:34:30.713 --> 00:34:31.634
Sure.

00:34:31.634 --> 00:34:35.998
This mega hit that invincible has become through prime.

00:34:35.998 --> 00:34:47.358
I never thought that I would see another mega hit like The Walking Dead, but does it kind of feel like Invincible is in that same playground as The Walking Dead in terms of just like sheer scope of people really enjoying it?

00:34:47.525 --> 00:34:53.289
I mean, it does to me, uh you know, and the show is definitely doing very well.

00:34:53.289 --> 00:34:58.326
It's pretty shocking to, you know, kind of be in that place again.

00:34:58.326 --> 00:35:10.722
I went with uh Gillian Jacobs and Sandra Oh to Brazil to promote Invincible at CCXP and, you know, it's massive panels and, you know.

00:35:10.722 --> 00:35:22.786
Thousands of people cheering and you know freaking out and you know We were kind of going from interview to panel to interview to panel promoting the show and and it was fun because uh Gillian and Sandra were like, my god, this is crazy.

00:35:22.786 --> 00:35:23.407
This is crazy.

00:35:23.407 --> 00:35:45.905
Yeah, this is so crazy and And I had to be like, yeah crazy Never seen anything like this before Crazy and inside I was like, it's kind of neat to you know be doing this again I haven't done this since you know the heyday of Walking Dead But yeah, was, it's pretty cool having Invincible finally get this kind of attention.

00:35:45.905 --> 00:35:54.485
It's also especially nice because I had like 15 years of Ryan Olley being like, oh, he walking dead gets so much attention.

00:35:55.186 --> 00:35:57.646
Invincible, no one wants to talk about Invincible.

00:35:57.646 --> 00:35:59.746
Walking dead, walking dead, everything's walking dead.

00:35:59.746 --> 00:36:01.126
Like, come on, man.

00:36:02.206 --> 00:36:04.172
Yeah, that's what he sounded like.

00:36:04.172 --> 00:36:06.851
And now you and now you got invincible in Fortnight.

00:36:08.918 --> 00:36:10.846
It's an immortal combat, my God.

00:36:10.846 --> 00:36:11.438
Yeah.

00:36:11.438 --> 00:36:12.744
I'm in an immortal combat.

00:36:12.744 --> 00:36:13.655
Best thing ever.

00:36:13.655 --> 00:36:14.085
Yes.

00:36:14.085 --> 00:36:14.487
No.

00:36:14.487 --> 00:36:18.340
I love also the fact that like, you know, what's interesting is I live in, I live in New York.

00:36:18.340 --> 00:36:26.641
like the list, like last few days, they've had a bunch of zombies walking around, like walking dead zombies in the city, uh, in Manhattan, just walking around, handing out flyers and stuff.

00:36:26.641 --> 00:36:27.639
It's pretty crazy.

00:36:27.639 --> 00:36:30.393
because we're promoting Dead City or something.

00:36:31.074 --> 00:36:33.822
Yeah, Ryan Walking Dead still out there.

00:36:33.822 --> 00:36:34.829
I that.

00:36:34.829 --> 00:36:35.824
Go there.

00:36:36.045 --> 00:36:38.865
Well, like I said, what a pleasure it was to get both of you on here today.

00:36:38.865 --> 00:36:39.885
Thank you guys so much.

00:36:39.885 --> 00:36:41.565
So great talking to you both.

00:36:41.565 --> 00:36:45.405
One last thing before I let you go is I'm going hand it off to Ryan.

00:36:45.405 --> 00:36:46.505
I'm going to start with you here.

00:36:46.505 --> 00:36:52.108
Is there anything that you want to sort of plug or highlight besides Battle Beast to the listener before we let you go?

00:36:52.108 --> 00:36:59.143
Man, I'm only working on Battle Beast right now, so yeah, mean, just get that Battle Beast May 14th.

00:36:59.143 --> 00:36:59.396
Yeah.

00:36:59.396 --> 00:37:00.398
Robert, how about you?

00:37:00.398 --> 00:37:01.838
There's a new book called Blood and Thunder.

00:37:01.838 --> 00:37:04.878
you're not reading that, you need check that out.

00:37:04.958 --> 00:37:07.978
It's by Benito Serino, E.J.

00:37:07.978 --> 00:37:09.038
Su and myself.

00:37:09.038 --> 00:37:10.677
It's a great sci-fi book.

00:37:10.677 --> 00:37:18.518
It's a buddy cop adventure with a space bounty hunter and her best friend, a talking sentient gun.

00:37:19.338 --> 00:37:20.597
It's a lot of fun.

00:37:20.597 --> 00:37:24.938
And then I got Void Rivals out there, part of the larger Inderjuan universe.

00:37:25.257 --> 00:37:29.112
If you're not reading any of the Inderjuan universe books, you're missing out.

00:37:29.112 --> 00:37:30.393
There's a lot of cool stuff going on.

00:37:30.393 --> 00:37:32.784
We're building a cool universe using G.I.

00:37:32.784 --> 00:37:34.686
Joe and Hasbro character, or G.I.

00:37:34.686 --> 00:37:45.132
Joe and Transformer characters, and uh some new characters that Lorenzo de Felice and I have created for Void Rivals that uh kind of round out the universe in a cool way.

00:37:45.132 --> 00:37:47.844
And it's a pretty cool book.

00:37:47.844 --> 00:37:49.394
A lot of fun.

00:37:49.456 --> 00:37:53.614
I feel like there's other stuff I'm forgetting, but that's all I got.

00:37:53.614 --> 00:37:54.193
Awesome.

00:37:54.193 --> 00:37:54.994
And I agree.

00:37:54.994 --> 00:37:59.914
Everyone should be should be reading the energon universe in some capacity, whether again, it'd be G.I.

00:37:59.914 --> 00:38:04.954
Joe transformers void rivals, all of it maybe probably should be reading.

00:38:04.954 --> 00:38:06.594
So totally agree there.

00:38:06.594 --> 00:38:08.353
Thank you both again so much.

00:38:08.353 --> 00:38:13.353
And we would love, love, love to have either both of you on together again at some point or separately.

00:38:13.393 --> 00:38:15.445
It would be our great pleasure.

00:38:15.445 --> 00:38:18.646
I will never appear in public with Ryan Otley ever again.

00:38:20.262 --> 00:38:23.626
All righty, there's that conversation with Robert Kirkman and Ryan Ottley.

00:38:23.626 --> 00:38:25.840
Thank you both so much for being here on the Abilvy More podcast.

00:38:25.840 --> 00:38:28.753
Once again, Battle Beast number one comes out on May 14th.

00:38:28.753 --> 00:38:30.315
Make sure you guys go grab that.

00:38:30.315 --> 00:38:32.637
I'm not telling anyone something they don't already know.

00:38:32.637 --> 00:38:34.230
It's invincible is back in comics.

00:38:34.230 --> 00:38:36.922
Of course, folks are to be lined up around the block.

00:38:36.922 --> 00:38:39.519
Aaron, we need to get ourselves some of those blind bags.

00:38:39.519 --> 00:38:40.911
I was just thinking the same thing.

00:38:40.911 --> 00:38:50.032
ah know, we've to reach back out to our sponsor of the show, Endless Comics, Cards and Games, and talk to them about getting some of those blind bags.

00:38:50.032 --> 00:38:57.849
Because, my God, imagine pulling like a one in one thousand getch cover or whatever like out of one of those bags.

00:38:57.849 --> 00:38:59.780
Like that is going to be insane.

00:38:59.780 --> 00:39:08.000
I've, you know, working with CSA at the conventions, we get to be around Ryan and we see a lot of his covers.

00:39:08.000 --> 00:39:13.731
especially his invincible covers that have Battle Beast on them and they are insane.

00:39:13.731 --> 00:39:14.431
They're incredible.

00:39:14.431 --> 00:39:21.614
Some of his sketches are just incredibly well done and he's so good at it because he's been doing it for, you know, 20 years.

00:39:21.614 --> 00:39:25.655
So it's, mean, this is just an exciting opportunity to get a piece of history here.

00:39:25.655 --> 00:39:28.195
So go check out those blind bags at your local comic shop.

00:39:28.195 --> 00:39:34.440
Hopefully you get some, if you get some, you know, tag us in your social, uh, social posts so that we can, you know, check out what you got.

00:39:34.440 --> 00:39:38.023
And we'd love to follow you and see what you guys got on those out of those blind bags.

00:39:38.023 --> 00:39:41.358
And if we can get our hands on some, we'll definitely post ours as well.

00:39:41.358 --> 00:39:42.998
Yeah, hopefully we can.

00:39:42.998 --> 00:39:46.577
And, know, they purposely stay really coy about what you can get.

00:39:46.577 --> 00:39:56.157
As we talk about in this conversation, Robert Kirkman, this wouldn't be a Robert Kirkman launch if he didn't have something really cool planned for that launch.

00:39:56.157 --> 00:40:05.657
And, you know, he talks about the covers and, you know, the blind bag is, you know, you can get all types of things, but like, I have a feeling they're going to offer something extremely rare.

00:40:05.657 --> 00:40:08.518
Like someone's going to pull a golden ticket out of one of these blind bags.

00:40:08.518 --> 00:40:16.400
And I can't wait to see what it is because no one plans like a uh surprise for their comic again, like Robert Kirkman.

00:40:16.400 --> 00:40:18.661
And I have a feeling that it has something to do with Ryan Otley.

00:40:18.661 --> 00:40:30.885
And one of my favorite moments in this conversation, and it's also maybe one of the more embarrassing moments is when Robert Kirkman starts talking about solid blood number 17, I genuinely had no idea what they were talking about.

00:40:30.885 --> 00:40:33.257
you like, did you know, were you tracking what they were talking about?

00:40:33.257 --> 00:40:34.789
I looked it up as they were talking about it.

00:40:34.789 --> 00:40:39.405
I've never heard of it before, that's it was an incredibly cool thing to see.

00:40:39.405 --> 00:40:43.286
I still don't know what it is really like it's solid blood number 17.

00:40:43.286 --> 00:40:58.327
So the If you understand, like what they said was that it's like, it's literally uh something that somebody found in a warehouse that was, that was printed and it's got their names on it and it looks like they drew it and it sounds like they wrote it, but it's not like they didn't do it.

00:40:58.327 --> 00:40:59.748
I think they were joshing us, Aaron.

00:40:59.748 --> 00:41:04.521
think that they did do it and they just were, they're like acting like they didn't do it.

00:41:05.242 --> 00:41:07.983
Aaron's Googling away right now.

00:41:07.983 --> 00:41:12.005
I really think that like they did this as like a fun bit for themselves.

00:41:12.005 --> 00:41:15.967
Like as a fun inside joke, like, ha ha, we're going to release a comic and not tell anyone.

00:41:15.967 --> 00:41:25.952
And it's going to be a random issue from a series that doesn't exist because like the back is an advertisement for Cory Walker's kick fight, which is not a real comic issue nine coming in March.

00:41:26.512 --> 00:41:28.034
Not a real comic guys.

00:41:28.034 --> 00:41:28.884
At least I don't think so.

00:41:28.884 --> 00:41:30.215
could be wrong there too.

00:41:30.215 --> 00:41:36.858
I genuinely think that this is Kirkman and Ottley doing a gaffe and just like joking in all of our, in all of our faces.

00:41:36.858 --> 00:41:43.539
But the thing about what's really funny about when we talked about this is that Kirkman and Ottley were both playing it straight.

00:41:43.539 --> 00:41:45.333
I can't tell if they're joking or not.

00:41:45.333 --> 00:41:45.900
You know what I mean?

00:41:45.900 --> 00:41:48.862
Like it's so hard to tell if they're being serious.

00:41:48.862 --> 00:41:50.722
That's sort of the fun thing about what we're talking about here.

00:41:50.722 --> 00:41:57.677
I'm sure there's some story out there that debunks all of this and that like it probably really was Kirkman and Ottley playing a joke on everybody in the comic world.

00:41:57.677 --> 00:41:58.820
because he's done it multiple times.

00:41:58.820 --> 00:42:03.746
Again, as I said in the conversation, the die, die, number one, coming out randomly without solicitation.

00:42:03.746 --> 00:42:08.253
The last issue of the walking dead being randomly dropped.

00:42:08.253 --> 00:42:09.420
He does this all the time.

00:42:09.420 --> 00:42:13.702
Yeah, can, I mean, that sounds, it sounds like a reasonable explanation.

00:42:13.702 --> 00:42:22.737
It's definitely cool though, to like, to, think about, because even I'm trying to think of like, it's, it's a fun idea because I've seen, oh, you who did it?

00:42:22.737 --> 00:42:24.639
The Umbrella Academy, show, did it.

00:42:24.639 --> 00:42:27.960
Like they had like a, a, a separate timeline.

00:42:27.960 --> 00:42:39.572
And so like in that, like the last, the final season, they had this group of people that were just like gathering these objects that looked like they, they, basically there's no way they were from that universe.

00:42:39.572 --> 00:42:44.978
had to have somehow come over from a different universe because they didn't, you know, not the right actors.

00:42:44.978 --> 00:42:53.739
It's like, remember the movie, um, last action hero when he's going to the, he goes to the blockbuster and it's Sylvester Stallone playing, you know, the Terminator.

00:42:53.739 --> 00:42:55.871
Yeah.

00:42:55.871 --> 00:42:57.733
It's such a cool idea though.

00:42:57.780 --> 00:42:58.519
It is fun.

00:42:58.519 --> 00:43:04.934
And again, it's a nice bit because I'm sure Kirkman and Ottley, they're playing into the bit still in 2025 and that's fun.

00:43:04.934 --> 00:43:06.164
You know what mean?

00:43:06.164 --> 00:43:17.681
And actually this like this conversation with Kirkman and Ottley really inspired me to go back and not only rewatch season one of invincible over on prime, but also I haven't seen anything past season one.

00:43:17.681 --> 00:43:20.934
And the first episode of season two is like pretty excellent.

00:43:20.934 --> 00:43:24.565
Everybody, if you, if for some reason you're not caught up with invincible.

00:43:24.565 --> 00:43:28.146
like I had some people, I heard some people complaining about it was taking too long to come out.

00:43:28.146 --> 00:43:31.268
If you've watched invincible, the quality is insanely good.

00:43:31.268 --> 00:43:33.829
So like let them do their thing.

00:43:33.829 --> 00:43:36.206
That's not demand content.

00:43:36.206 --> 00:43:37.550
Cause there's a ton of it out there.

00:43:37.550 --> 00:43:39.909
We're giving you some of it to you right now.

00:43:39.909 --> 00:43:43.001
Like I'm not saying we're on the same level as invincible, but like this is content.

00:43:43.001 --> 00:43:45.012
There's no shortage for content anywhere.

00:43:45.012 --> 00:43:46.782
So just excited for more of all this.

00:43:46.782 --> 00:43:53.193
And again, I just, cannot talk enough about how much of an honor it was to get Robert Kirkman and Ryan Notley here on the show today.

00:43:53.193 --> 00:43:56.277
It is truly like a landmark here on the oblivion bar.

00:43:56.277 --> 00:43:59.039
And you know, I think we played it pretty cool there.

00:43:59.039 --> 00:44:08.338
And I think it's one of those things where like we often get in our own heads about like these guests because we revere them and there's no one bigger in the industry than Robert Kirkman and Ryan Olly.

00:44:08.338 --> 00:44:12.961
But like, I think we almost immediately were like just broing it up with them.

00:44:12.961 --> 00:44:18.054
And I think that that's the problem sometimes is this was a new set of parameters that we weren't used to.

00:44:18.054 --> 00:44:23.246
This was like a very much time limited, you know, here your bookends be done.

00:44:23.246 --> 00:44:27.527
And then we were also running late, so we didn't know how their temperament would be.

00:44:27.608 --> 00:44:28.248
We weren't.

00:44:28.248 --> 00:44:29.289
They were running late.

00:44:29.289 --> 00:44:33.351
uh So like we didn't know if their temperament, how that would be.

00:44:33.471 --> 00:44:38.492
And again, yeah, I would just say like for what we had, what we could do and what we did.

00:44:38.492 --> 00:44:40.141
It was a great conversation.

00:44:40.141 --> 00:44:41.041
Yeah, agreed.

00:44:41.041 --> 00:44:48.382
You'd be surprised how many of these publishers just give us an email and say, Hey, go talk to, you know, Joe Schmo.

00:44:48.382 --> 00:44:50.461
And then they let us do whatever we want.

00:44:50.461 --> 00:44:52.461
We can talk, we ask them whatever questions we want.

00:44:52.461 --> 00:44:54.601
Not necessarily the case here, but that's okay.

00:44:54.601 --> 00:44:56.681
So that'll do it for episode one 93.

00:44:56.681 --> 00:44:59.782
Once again, thank you, Robert and Ryan for coming on the show.

00:44:59.782 --> 00:45:00.242
Battle Beast.

00:45:00.242 --> 00:45:01.422
Number one again comes out the week.

00:45:01.422 --> 00:45:02.222
This episode comes out.

00:45:02.222 --> 00:45:03.242
Make sure you guys go check it out.

00:45:03.242 --> 00:45:06.181
Aaron and I have already read it and it was awesome.

00:45:06.181 --> 00:45:08.523
So that'll do it for episode one 83.

00:45:08.523 --> 00:45:15.041
Episode 194, Aaron, speaking of battles, Battle Royale number six.

00:45:15.041 --> 00:45:16.041
We've been teasing it.

00:45:16.041 --> 00:45:17.884
ah It's been in the works.

00:45:17.884 --> 00:45:26.833
seems like for a little bare naked ladies, someone put, we need to remember this, put one of the people from bare naked ladies into this Battle Royale.

00:45:26.833 --> 00:45:29.835
ah Ooh, that's a good idea.

00:45:29.985 --> 00:45:31.786
bare naked lady versus.

00:45:32.786 --> 00:45:34.266
They get barely battle beasts.

00:45:34.266 --> 00:45:43.969
uh Yeah, so, you know, Battle Royale number six, everybody, if you're not familiar with Battle Royale, it is one of Aaron and I's favorite segments around the Oblivion Bar.

00:45:43.969 --> 00:45:53.452
Basically, we take five random fighters against, you know, all of fiction, comics, movies, television, video games, novels.

00:45:53.452 --> 00:45:55.833
I've even thrown Aaron into one of these fights before.

00:45:55.833 --> 00:45:57.603
uh It could even be nonfiction.

00:45:57.603 --> 00:45:59.025
You put Abraham Lincoln.

00:45:59.025 --> 00:46:04.737
whoever it doesn't matter into these fights and then Aaron I have to debate on who we think would win these fights.

00:46:04.737 --> 00:46:05.378
Yes.

00:46:05.378 --> 00:46:10.721
Random arenas with different rules, different like changes in them, different environments.

00:46:10.721 --> 00:46:19.855
And then also once the actual show is released, we then give the option to the listeners to go and vote on like, Oh, that's going to be interesting.

00:46:19.855 --> 00:46:20.574
Are we going to be able to do that?

00:46:20.574 --> 00:46:22.326
Cause we're not on, we're not on Twitter anymore.

00:46:22.326 --> 00:46:27.909
So we'll have to figure out another way for people to vote, which will be fun on, some of these other other platforms.

00:46:27.909 --> 00:46:30.130
Oh, no, you can do polls on Instagram, I think.

00:46:30.130 --> 00:46:30.360
Yeah.

00:46:30.360 --> 00:46:30.500
Yeah.

00:46:30.500 --> 00:46:30.639
Yeah.

00:46:30.639 --> 00:46:30.943
Yeah.

00:46:30.943 --> 00:46:31.369
So that.

00:46:31.369 --> 00:46:32.740
That's honestly what's most important.

00:46:32.740 --> 00:46:37.414
Like Aaron, can sit the debate on the show is just for a fun giggle.

00:46:37.414 --> 00:46:42.123
You know, like we will determine a winner between he and I, and we try to be completely unbiased.

00:46:42.123 --> 00:46:57.708
I think we do actually a pretty good job of being unbiased and just sort of listen to each other and, you know, give each other grace when it comes to like, we're not going to know everything, but if we make a compelling argument of why Mandalorian would kill Darth Vader, then you know, we'll honor that.

00:46:57.708 --> 00:47:01.320
But like what really matters is the vote.

00:47:03.751 --> 00:47:07.719
is good shaking hands at the end as good sportsmanship.

00:47:07.726 --> 00:47:08.197
That's right.

00:47:08.197 --> 00:47:10.739
A nice firm grasp of a behind.

00:47:11.822 --> 00:47:20.489
uh The scene from Bridesmaids when she...

00:47:20.608 --> 00:47:21.762
Oblipioteca.

00:47:21.762 --> 00:47:25.038
This needs to be open because of the civil rights.

00:47:25.038 --> 00:47:25.818
was I going to say?

00:47:25.818 --> 00:47:26.117
I forgot.

00:47:26.117 --> 00:47:26.617
Bad brain.

00:47:26.617 --> 00:47:28.217
Bad brain strikes again.

00:47:28.458 --> 00:47:34.286
Oh, I was going to say something about the voting and the voting and the...

00:47:34.286 --> 00:47:36.306
Is it that I've won three?

00:47:36.306 --> 00:47:37.168
You've won two.

00:47:37.168 --> 00:47:37.768
Yeah.

00:47:37.768 --> 00:47:38.708
Oh, you know what it was?

00:47:38.708 --> 00:47:39.650

And last but not least, do not forget to tape your bartenders 20 % or more.

00:49:13.469 --> 00:49:16.599
And then, you know what, to even add to that, round up to the next dollar.

00:49:16.599 --> 00:49:17.130
That's right.

00:49:17.130 --> 00:49:17.550
Yeah.

00:49:17.550 --> 00:49:20.894
Tip 20 % and then add a dollar on top of that.

00:49:20.976 --> 00:49:27.224
It would mean a metric poop ton to that server and or bartender or Uber driver.

00:49:27.224 --> 00:49:28.766
Don't tip your Qdoba guy.

00:49:28.766 --> 00:49:29.096
Okay.

00:49:29.096 --> 00:49:30.248
Let's, let's chill out.

00:49:30.248 --> 00:49:31.469
The tipping has got out of control.

00:49:31.469 --> 00:49:32.251
I get it.

00:49:32.251 --> 00:49:34.791
But like, let's tip the people that need to be tipped.

00:49:34.791 --> 00:49:37.907
is a little tipping button on everything.

00:49:40.673 --> 00:49:41.775
bartenders and servers.

00:49:41.775 --> 00:49:42.648
Yeah.

00:49:42.648 --> 00:49:43.730
People in the service industry.

00:49:43.730 --> 00:49:44.780
Valet.

00:49:45.436 --> 00:49:45.846
Yeah.

00:49:45.846 --> 00:49:46.597
Taxi drivers.

00:49:46.597 --> 00:49:47.297
Valet.

00:49:47.297 --> 00:49:50.478
You're uh you're you're you're lady of the night.

00:49:50.478 --> 00:49:50.867
Right.

00:49:50.867 --> 00:49:53.418
Like she did a lot of things for you.

00:49:54.414 --> 00:49:56.487
I went to like a prostitute.

00:49:56.487 --> 00:49:58.240
You're like tattoo artist, right?

00:50:00.101 --> 00:50:02.331
What about a tattoo artist that's a prostitute?

00:50:03.021 --> 00:50:04.237
You're getting stuck many ways.

00:50:04.237 --> 00:50:07.737
You got to tip 30 % for that because they double the work.

00:50:07.818 --> 00:50:11.432
Oh, no, there's too many ways we goodbye.

00:50:12.054 --> 00:50:12.927
Goodbye.

00:50:12.927 --> 00:50:13.748
All right, buddy.
